Passport Book - costs $100 - can be used all over the world - any means of transportation

Passport Card - costs $45 - can only be used in Mexico, Canada and Bermuda - only for land or
sea arrivals 
Both are good for 10 years.

You can get them at most post offices during their normal business hours.  Best to check with your
post office to be sure they offer the service - not all do. 

To apply, you can go online and fill out the form, print it out and take it with you.  Or you can fill it out
at the post office.  You will need 2 passport photos (from the post office or Walgreen's will take them). 
The cost is $15.  You also need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a valid driver's license or
other photo ID.
